Mitsubishi Electric Ductless Heat Pump Systems

Energy Efficient Heating & Cooling

Keeping your loved ones comfortable during hot, humid summers requires a cooling system that works with the design of your home. It should allow you to choose which parts of the house to keep cool and which parts to keep switched off to conserve power and reduce energy bills. With a mini-split heat pump unit/s, you have the ultimate level of flexibility at your fingertips. Simple to install, efficient to run, and highly-capable in almost any environment, mini-splits are the key to achieving better temperature control, higher indoor air quality, and lower energy bills.

At Western Mass Heating & Cooling, we install hundreds of Mitsubishi Electric Mini-Split systems every year, and our team has the experience and the technical know-how to help you make the right choice for your home.

The majority of our systems are ENERGY STAR® qualified and many systems are eligible for utility rebates or other incentives. Part of our design process is to find the best incentives and make sure the systems we propose are the best match for your home and individual needs.

What are Ductless Mini-Split Systems

A mini-split system, also called a ductless heat pump, consists of two main elements; an indoor unit mounted to a wall inside your home and an outdoor unit located outside the house or your business. The exterior unit is the heart of the system, with refrigerant & electrical lines running through the exterior walls to the indoor wall-mounted cooling units. The outdoor unit's main component is an inverter-driven heat pump that compresses the refrigerant and pushes it inside to an air handler. A wireless control unit allows you to adjust the temperature, fan speed, and more with the touch of a button.

There are plenty of benefits to using a Ductless HVAC system over a more traditional window system or even a central AC system. These are:

  1. Easier installation

  2. Simpler maintenance and greater reliability

  3. Heating and Cooling functions from the same system

  4. Wireless controllability

  5. Independent room temperature control

  6. Easily hidden outdoor units

  7. Wide product capacity range to accommodate different house/room/business needs.

Ductless HVAC Systems are ideally suited for:

  1. New additions to your home or business

  2. Areas without ductwork such as renovated spaces, garages, basements

  3. Almost Anywhere!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are mini-splits and how are they different from central air conditioning systems?

Like a central air conditioning unit, a mini-split heat pump system allows you to control the temperature and reduce humidity. One advantage of a mini-split, however, is the ability to control each room individually. Unlike a central air conditioning unit, mini-splits are entirely ductless. They consist of an outdoor compressor unit and single or multiple indoor air-handling units that deliver hot or cold air into individual rooms.

A mini-split system has plenty of advantages over a central air conditioning system in a retrofit situation namely:

  • No ductwork, making installation easier, quicker, and more affordable.

  • Indoor air quality on par with central air con systems.

  • Energy efficiency, since each individual room or living space can be individually controlled.

  • Efficient heating & cooling (mini-splits are generally heat pumps)

Does my house have to be a certain size to use Mini-Splits?

No. Any size home can be a good candidate for mini-splits. If you live in a small home, a rented house, or even an apartment in the city where space is at a premium, Mini-Splits are a great way to keep cool during the hot summer months since both the indoor and outdoor units are compact. By not needing any expensive and complicated ductwork or, worse, losing cooling power to leaks in the ductwork under the floor or in crawl spaces, energy bills are far more affordable than a central air system.

Can Mini Splits replace my existing fossil fuel system?

Yes!*  *As long as the system is designed with 100% heating capacity in mind. In cases where we are designing for 100% heating capacity, we will do a comprehensive load calculation with Manual-J software to make sure we are sizing the system according to your homes load profile, and not oversizing and wasting energy.

Can Mini Splits work with my existing HVAC system?

Yes! We can design our systems to either work completely independently, or we can design our systems to work together and “integrate” with your existing HVAC or boiler heating system.

Is servicing a mini-split system difficult or expensive?

Not at all! Our technical team is comprehensive when it comes to the installation process. After the indoor and outdoor unit installation is completed, tests are conducted to ensure everything is running as it should. The only time you’ll need to call our team again is during the annual maintenance interval, which our team will be happy to brief you on.

When is the best time to install mini-split systems?

Anytime! We install year-round. The only limitations are extreme weather like a blizzard or an arctic blast – mainly because we don’t want our technicians exposed to dangerous weather. But we certainly install all year round.

Reliability

The advances in the heating performance of these units are unmatched in the industry. Mitsubishi Electric's available H2i® technology can heat your space effectively, even when temperatures outside are down to -13º F. The Hot Start technology delivers hot air as soon as the unit is powered on with no drafts. Blue Fin Technology on the coils keeps your system clean and improves longevity compared to the competition.

Quiet Operation

Both the indoor and outdoor units are specifically designed to provide quiet operation. With the indoor unit operating as low as 19dB, the operation of your heating system will be quieter than a human whisper.

Control Options

  • Each room (or each indoor unit) will have its own control – ultimate comfort for all.

  • Standard Handheld remote

  • Wall mounted touchscreen thermostat

  • WIFI via the KUMO App

  • Compatible with many smart thermostats, and home apps like Alexa.

Ductless Mini-Split Systems vs The Rest

How is a Ductless System different from a Central HVAC System?

With a ductless HVAC system, you can control the conditioned air volume entering a room remotely. This control makes it possible to maintain a comfortable temperature in one room while leaving the system on a low power setting in another part of the same building.

In a central air conditioning system, cooled air is distributed equally to every room via the home or building's existing ducting. This lack of flexibility makes it impossible to regulate the amount of cool air in a single room without affecting every other room's temperature in the same building.

Additionally, central air systems depend on air ducts and how clean and well-maintained they are inside. Anything less than top condition can mean that pollen, smoke, and other pollutants can circulate through your home or business while you're trying to heat & cool it. Since ductless mini-splits are just that, ductless, the indoor air stays clean.

How is a Ductless System different from a Window AC System?

Window AC units, while capable in their own right, come with a host of issues that need to be dealt with:

  1. Ductless mini-splits are far more efficient & quiet when compared to window units.

  2. You lose the use of one window in every room that a window unit is fitted in.

  3. Proper sizing to fit the window opening to ensure a snug fit

  4. Filling the remaining space around the AC unit, if any.

  5. Less visibility from inside the room and unattractive from outside.

  6. House or building security, as the AC unit can be removed from outside with enough force, allowing entry to the premises.

On the other hand, ductless systems leave all windows available for use and pose no threats to home security. Lastly, with ductless sytems, you don't have any clunky units to uninstall and store every year during the winter months.
